Remove the price, keep the note short, and never follow up asking whether it arrived. Elegance is the absence of pressure.

A gift that requires acknowledgement is an invoice.

Escalate slowly. The second gift should never be three times the first.

Discretion, updated

Quiet luxury changed the etiquette of giving as much as the etiquette of dressing. Visible price is now the error; visible thought is the standard. Remove the price, keep the receipt, and never mention either again.

The rules that still hold

  • Never gift something that requires maintenance she did not ask for.
  • Never make a gift public before she has seen it.
  • Never give jewellery early in a relationship; give scent or a journey instead.
  • Never attach conditions, even lightly, even in jest.
  • Always include a way to exchange without embarrassment.
A gift that needs explaining was chosen for the wrong audience.
